Our Kindergarten Readiness Journey: Part One
I’m not really sure how it happened, but my sweet little baby girl will be starting kindergarten in September!
About a month and a half ago, the two us attended her first kindergarten registration day together, and I was surprised at how quickly I became overwhelmed at the prospect of sending my little one off to school! The funny thing is, Indy will be attending the same school that I went to as a kindergartener, and where I am currently working as an occasional teacher! So maybe I should be feeling a little more relaxed, right? But something about seeing the once-familiar gymnasium completely transformed with rows and rows of tables brimming with information about all these decisions we have to make (after school care? french immersion? busing?) had me speechless. And Indy, who is always so curious and very excited about starting school, just quietly clutched the jar of play-doh she had been given as part of her information packet and silently took it all in.
I am qualified to teach the junior/intermediate grades (grades 4-10), and while I have spent some time in kindergarten classrooms since beginning my teaching career, I will fully admit that I feel totally unequipped for preparing Indy for school. Like every child, Indy is naturally so curious and eager to learn. How do I foster this and cultivate a love and excitement for learning without overwhelming her? How do I facilitate her learning of the skills that will be vital when she starts school without making education sterile, rigid or boring?
While I am no expert in kindergarten readiness, I would like to share with you our journey of how we are preparing for kindergarten. It isn’t Pinterest-perfect, and there will definitely be a lot of trial and error along the way, but I want to share a glimpse of getting ready for school from both the eyes of a mother and a teacher. Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for some of the fun activities that we have been exploring as we begin on our journey towards kindergarten!
